size: 200 x 280 cm
material: illuminated ceramic print on glass
client: Woonwijze, housing cooperation, Vught, NL
year: 2013
Woonwijze comissioned a work of art on the outer side of their main headquarters in Vught. Korfmann’s installation consists of a 2 meter by 2,80 meter glass plate, which is installed on a window niche about 3 meters high on a generous, postmodern building. On this vertically positioned plate several precious Koi carps can be seen, cavorting on the building façade. The viewer of the work experiences a moment of irritation: although he looks up, at the same time he looks down into an ornamental pond. This paradox is even further reinforced by the backlight of the work, which gives the impression that the pond is illuminated from below: by the light, the golden glowing carps move closer to the surface, while the water seems even more profound. The work invites us to reflect on our culture of status symbols and on our relationship to nature.
