Silver, 4min 10sec (Berlin)
material: enduratrans / diasec / lightbox
size: 150x80x10 cm
year: 2008
Timed consists of a series of photographs presented in light boxes in which the progress of time is being visualized through a sequence of successive instants. The photos are derived from video clips, usually of a few minutes duration, from which images are extracted according to a strict system, for example every 5th or 7thframe, and placed in their proper sequence. For each work in the series, a new rhythm is determined which not always results in a purely chronological registration of time running from left to right in a horizontal series. The duration of the captured event as measured by the video clip is cited in the title. The recordings are always made from a bird’s eye view on locations which provide natural monochrome surfaces for a ground, such as the blue water of Blue one Minute, the green football field of Green two Minutes, the black night scene of Berlin 360 Degree (30 Minutes), and the white ice of the skating rink in White one Minute. Because this brings a degree of abstraction to the images, the emphasis is placed on the composition and structure of the works. In later works from this series such as Febo (4 days 2 locations) the artist has chosen to ease the severity of her strict selection system and a subjective intervention in the composition becomes possible. The use of the light box coupled to the law of the sequential, refers to the cinema and therefore the tension between moving and still images. The photos are detailed observations from moment to moment of the behaviour of people in specific situations in public spaces.

Grey, 12 min 30 sec
Photographic installation
dimensions variable
year: 2006
Installation view at Art Affairs Amsterdam
Grey is a photo installation consisting of hundreds of images derived from video recordings made at Peter Eisenman’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. As the title indicates the work concentrates on events recorded within a 12 minute and 30 second slice of time, from which images are taken every other second and presented sequentially in horizontal rows. The installation visualizes the progression of time in a spatial image which scrutinizes the borders between video and photography, between still and moving images. The paths which run through the monument have been continuously traversed and filmed from different perspectives while encountering the people who are wandering amidst the pervasive grey stone blocks. When presented as an installation the succession of tightly packed images spread over several walls envelopes the viewer in a dizzying play of shifting views. For each installation the work is shown in different dimensions in order to fit the particular space in which it is presented.
Hospital One Month
Photographic Installation
material: neon lights / enduratrans print
size: 280 x 300 cm
year: 2002
In Hospital One Month Korfmann photographed over the span of one month the OLVG Hospital in Amsterdam from the window of her studio which was situated across the street. Every evening she photographed the same three windows. The image behind the windows changes each time, sometimes the light is on, sometimes it is dark, and in some pictures there are people executing some tasks, while in others the space is empty. In this way the work registers the events which occur within this period at this specific location. The photos are finally compressed and put into a sequence to form a dense matrix. The work is presented as a large hanging slide, lit from behind, so that the installation itself takes the form of the facade of a building with lit windows through which we can peek inside.
